NSA Mimics Google, Pisses Off Senate | Wired Enterprise | Wired.com

Sad example of where the one dept of the Fed comes up with a pretty good innovation and the bureaucracy tries to squash it.  The NSA created Accumulo, a hadoop toolset, to tackle big data surveillance jobs.  They had some issues with the available off the shelf solutions when they began this project.  Namely the existing implementations were very immature, unproven, and not secure to the level that the NSA required.

Oh well, another example of how the government has snuffed inovation.

Visual Command Center

Here is a flickr stream of some pretty outstanding visualizations.  They are done by a company called Visual Command Center.  Good stuff!

CL doing some visualization

Cool, yet another nice illustration of a mashup.  Craigslist data and a map of the US are combined to show relative Craigslist communities.  Pretty cool.

Visualizing Yahoo! Mail

Yahoo is brilliant for the moment.  This is a great visualization.  And is actually running in real time.

Real-time Twitter heat map with MongoDB « comSysto.com

Awesome depiction of Tweets being sent and received during a 10 day period.  The twit tracked was "Good Morning"  and they added a time lasped data set and overlaid the data set to its geographical value.  The colors change as the broadcast of the tweets increases.  The was made with MongoDB and I think the team at Vertaline created the visualization    They also used a word that is "no-no' in my house, but gets said too much.   Oh, the source code is available to fork, Why not try and see if you can add different variables and then create a new map.

If you read the previous entry, I mentioned this really cool MongoDB tool that will allow you create real-time heatmaps of twitter entries.
